Title: The Barrier of Fear
Sermon Date: October 12th
The Problem: The Nature of Fear
Fear is not just a feeling. It is:
Fear is not just a feeling. It is:
- A foreign spirit and an illegal occupant in the house of the Lord.
- A battering ram used by the enemy to separate you from your Source.
- Faith in the wrong kingdom—it’s believing the enemy’s narrative over God’s truth.
The First Fear:
Genesis 3:10 - Adam’s guilt-induced fear after sinning, which caused him to hide from God. This is the root of fear rooted in shame and broken fellowship.
The Ultimate Fear:
Hebrews 2:14-15 - Jesus came to destroy the devil and "deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery."
How Fear Manifests in Our Lives
Genesis 3:10 - Adam’s guilt-induced fear after sinning, which caused him to hide from God. This is the root of fear rooted in shame and broken fellowship.
The Ultimate Fear:
Hebrews 2:14-15 - Jesus came to destroy the devil and "deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery."
How Fear Manifests in Our Lives
- Guilt-Induced Fear: Causes us to avoid prayer, isolate ourselves, and feel anxiety about God's judgment.
- Fear Through Legalistic Control: When people use rules and disapproval to control you, it's spiritual extortion, not shepherding.
- Weaponization of Insecurity: When someone feeds your insecurities to make you afraid of leaving or challenging them.
The Antidote: The Power of Perfect Love
The cycle of fear ends where the revelation of love begins.
1 John 4:18 (ESV) - “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with torment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
- Perfect Love: God’s sacrificial, adoptive love demonstrated through Christ.
- The Result: When we understand we are God’s beloved children, the paralyzing fear of punishment and rejection is eradicated.
- Fear is a Liar: It promises safety but only delivers bondage.
Our Authority Over Fear
Jesus didn’t suggest we try not to fear; He commanded us not to.
Psalm 56:3-4 - “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God I trust; I shall not be afraid.”
John 14:27 - “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
Psalm 56:3-4 - “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God I trust; I shall not be afraid.”
John 14:27 - “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
- You have authority over fear. You don’t counsel it—you cast it out.
- The antidote is knowing Him: "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32).
Key Takeaways
- You have a choice: Be led by the Father or led by fear.
- Fear is a spirit that brings torment and seeks to control you.
- The solution is not willpower but a revelation of God’s perfect love for you as His child.
- You have the authority, in the name of Jesus, to serve fear an eviction notice from your life.
- Stand on the truth that nothing can separate you from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39).
Reflection & Application
- What area of my life is currently being controlled by fear?
- Do I truly see God as a loving Father, or do I still fear His punishment?
- What is one Scripture about God’s love or power that I can declare when fear arises?
Let this be the week you serve fear its eviction notice and walk in the freedom of being a child of God!
Scriptures used:
2 Timothy 2:19 (ESV) But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
Psalm 56:3–4 (ESV) When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?
Romans 8:35–39 (ESV) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Hebrews 2:14-15 (ESV) Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
Romans 8:15 (ESV) For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Luke 8:49-50 (ESV) While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.” But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”
Matthew 10:26-31 (ESV)
Genesis 3:10 (ESV) And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
1 John 4:18 (ESV) There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
John 14:27 (ESV) Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 8:32 (ESV) And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
